Safe Migration: From Sharepoint to Sitecore

Back in 2015, Microsoft announced they were dropping the so-called public website from SharePoint Online and Office 365 platforms - a feature that allowed customers to build public-facing websites on top of SharePoint. For new customers, this change meant that the feature wasn’t available at all while existing customers would only be able to use it until March 2017. Since then, existing customers have been able to postpone the removal of their SharePoint Online public website, which would allow them to continue to use the site through March 2018.

So, now what?

As the clock is clearly ticking, Microsoft is urging customers to move to, and new customers to choose, third-party providers like Sitecore that provide a complete solution for building an online presence.

Microsoft explains: “As part of the evolution of the Office 365 service, we periodically evaluate the capabilities of the service to make sure that we’re delivering the utmost value to customers. Although it was a difficult decision to discontinue the SharePoint Online Public Website feature, this change lets us focus on future investments while we broaden our partnership with industry leaders.”

Why choose Sitecore

Like SharePoint, Sitecore has been around for the last decade and is one of the global leaders in customer experience management. Sitecore is not just a CMS, but a complete digital marketing platform – or experience platform as they themselves like to call it.

Where Microsoft stopped releasing additional features supporting web content management (WCM) several years ago, Sitecore continued to invest and focus on this. Sitecore enables web marketers and content editors to have full control over all aspects of their website, including social integration, personalisation, marketing automation, advanced reporting and much more.

For organisations that want more control of their website, a more advanced editorial experience, and some of the most forefront, innovative and progressive marketing tools, Sitecore is a really good option. It is also important to mention that Sitecore fully integrates with SharePoint so all the content in SharePoint can be leveraged in Sitecore.
