Kino.dk has been inspiring Danes to go to the cinema by sharing film news, guides, and creating an online community for film enthusiasts. The popular film website decided to expand its focus and enter the streaming universe with the launch of StreamingGuide.Kino.dk. Therefore, Kino.dk chose Novicell to develop a site that, in line with their primary site, will inspire film lovers with articles and guides about the latest and best films and series available on streaming and video-on-demand services.

A new streaming guide for film enthusiasts

Around 6-12 months before the theatrical release of a film, Kino.dk's content team begins writing about the film. The goal is to build up traffic leading to the premiere and then sustain it as long as the film is in cinemas, to increase ticket sales. However, with this strategy, the value of the content produced by Kino.dk about a specific film diminishes as soon as the film is no longer in theaters. With StreamingGuide, Kino.dk breathes new life into that content, while also creating new guides and articles about films and series premiering outside of cinemas. This is the rationale behind the idea of creating the new portal, StreamingGuide.Kino.dk.

At first glance, it may seem like StreamingGuide would be a competitor to Kino.dk's focus on inspiring more Danes to go to the cinema. However, that is not the case. When a film has its theatrical release, it is quite common for searches related to films by the same director or featuring the same lead actor to increase significantly. People do not go to the cinema less simply because they have a Netflix subscription or rent films on Blockbuster.dk – quite the opposite. People who frequently go to the cinema also stream many films, and vice versa. Therefore, there is a significant overlap between the target audiences, making it logical for Kino.dk to offer a StreamingGuide as well.

Agility provides flexibility

With a clear idea of what the new StreamingGuide should achieve, the development of an editorial-driven site was initiated. Agile methods were employed during the development process, increasing flexibility through small iterations and a constant focus on users and the most essential features, enabling the site to go live as quickly as possible. This means that all non-essential initiatives have been postponed to later development phases.

It is a highly interesting way of working that many companies can learn from in reality. Speed can be crucial when working with new concepts that one wants to try out in a beta version before further development.
