Headless

Headless is an approach that ensures efficient support of several digital channels on the same solution architecture

Numerous digital channels and data sources

Headless is a solution architecture where backend systems are independent of the number and content of digital sales channels. This means that digital channels can have individual designs and multiple data sources based on the same solution architecture.

Novicell and headless

Novicell has a long history of implementing headless solutions. The first steps towards separating presentation and platform happened in 2015: fast forward to today, when the majority of new projects are implemented headlessly.

Advantages of headless

    Scalability/Performance

A headless solution can be scaled up via cloud hosting and ensure performance throughout the world.

    Agility in ongoing development

Headless means that the digital channels can be further developed individually and at the same time the functionality can be shared across channels as needed

    Security

Headless works via an API gateway, which facilitates the connection between channels and the backend. This increases IT security, since everything behind the API gateway is not publicly available.

  • Omni-channel

When the APIs are available for all channels, omni-channel becomes easier, as an API developed for one channel can be used by all channels.

The future for headless

Novicell considers the adoption of headless as a step on the way to replace custom frontend development and to use "frontend as a service". It is an area that is still undergoing consolidation in the market, and of course we are following developments closely.

When is headless relevant?

Headless is not suitable for all business models. The two biggest factors are requirements for many data sources (CMS, Commerce, Search, Personalisation and more) and many digital channels, e.g. websites, APP or in-store solutions.

In these scenarios, a headless solution is advantageous in terms of efficiency and flexibility.
So you can both support channels and adapt channels individually independently of other sources.

If you run a webshop with one channel and have no intention of adding more, then headless is not necessarily suitable for you.
