How Tropica streamlined product data management with Perfion PIM

Background

Danish company Tropica Aquarium Plants develops, produces, and sells aquarium plants, fertilizers, and accessories for aquariums. The company supplies to retailers in Europe, Asia, and North America. Novicell has implemented Perfion PIM for both Tropica Aquarium Plants and their German sister company, Dennerle Plants. PIM has provided the company with a comprehensive overview of product data and made the process of enriching products much more efficient and streamlined.

From manual processes to automated product data

Before implementing PIM, it was complicated and time-consuming for Tropica to enrich their products in the webshop with relevant data. Products came from the ERP system and were sent to Umbraco – but only with raw data. All product information and images had to be manually linked to each individual product directly in Umbraco. Tropica needed a more efficient way to enrich products. It was evident that inheritance needed to be established, so products could be enriched at a high level, with all products beneath that level inheriting the data. It was also essential to consolidate data across the company, making it obvious to gather both Danish Tropica and German Dennerle Plants in the same PIM system.

How we solved Tropica’s challenge

    Implementation

The implementation of Perfion PIM brought all product data across Tropica's two companies into one central platform. This creates a shared data foundation that ensures consistency and efficient management of information throughout the organization.

    Identification

Before the system was put into use, we conducted a thorough analysis of what data should reside in PIM versus ERP. This work included mapping existing data sources, categorizing product information, and determining ownership for different data types.

    Integration

Integration setup from Tropica’s ERP system transfers all data to PIM, where it can be enriched. Through integration, the data is sent to the website. This ensures that the correct, updated data is available in all systems as soon as a customer updates it in PIM.

From manual work to strategic management: Tropica’s new approach to product data

With the implementation of a new PIM solution, Tropica has achieved significant benefits that enhance both efficiency and strategic flexibility in the organization. One of the biggest gains is the ability to utilize skills across the entire company. A single administrator can now enrich products centrally, ensuring consistent data quality and freeing up resources in other parts of the organization.

At the same time, the enrichment process itself has become much more efficient thanks to data inheritance. This means that Tropica can add information at a higher level, which is then automatically inherited by all relevant products in a group. This avoids repetitive manual entries and minimizes the risk of errors because the data comes from one central source and is used consistently.

Finally, the solution has opened up much greater flexibility and scalability for the future. If Tropica wants to add new brands, systems, or platforms, it becomes much easier to integrate and exchange data, as the PIM solution supports a modern, open architecture. This makes the company more agile and ready to support future growth and digital transformation.
